I get asked all the time by people moving here: “Does it ever rain in Las Vegas?”
It’s a fair question — especially if you’re coming from somewhere that actually has seasons and clouds.
The short answer? Yes, it rains… but not often.
Las Vegas averages about 4–5 inches of rain a year, spread across roughly 25 days. That’s it! Most days are bright, dry, and sun-filled — one of the biggest reasons people move here in the first place.
The climate here is what’s known as a hot desert climate. So when rain does happen, it’s usually either:
A quick winter shower that’s gone before you finish your coffee, or
A dramatic summer monsoon with lightning and thunder that looks straight out of a movie — but clears just as fast as it arrived.
Because the desert ground is so hard and dry, even a short downpour can create a sudden flash flood. You’ll see water rushing through streets that were bone-dry just minutes before.
If you’re new here, don’t panic — that’s normal for the valley. The city’s flood-control system does an impressive job of directing it away quickly. And the skies usually open back up to sunshine within the hour.
For homeowners in communities like The Lakes, Summerlin South, and Rhodes Ranch, the lack of rain is both a blessing and a design consideration.
You’ll have fewer roof leaks and no mold worries compared to humid climates.
Xeriscaping — low-water, desert-friendly landscaping — keeps your yard beautiful year-round with minimal maintenance.
And those outdoor living spaces? You’ll actually use them most of the year, since the odds of a rained-out BBQ are slim to none.
When it does rain, locals actually get excited. The air smells amazing, the mountains glow green for a few days, and everyone takes photos of the puddles like they’ve just seen a unicorn.
So yes, it rains in Las Vegas — just enough to remind us how special those rare cozy days are before the sunshine returns.
If you’re thinking about relocating or buying a home in the Las Vegas Valley — where sunshine and blue skies are practically guaranteed — let’s chat.
