Friday Fun Fact: The Flamingo Hotel — Vintage Vegas, Still Standing Strong

by Keli James

If these pink neon walls could talk…

When you think of old-school Las Vegas—mobsters in suits, swanky showgirls, and cocktails flowing freely—The Flamingo Hotel is probably the image that pops into your head. But what many people don’t know is that this iconic property isn’t just a fun slice of Vegas nostalgia—it’s also the oldest, still-operating resort on the Las Vegas Strip.

🗓 A Legendary Opening in 1946

The Flamingo officially opened its doors on December 26, 1946, but its story begins a bit earlier with a name you’ve definitely heard: Bugsy Siegel. A prominent figure in the organized crime world, Siegel had a bold vision to create a luxury hotel and casino unlike anything the desert had ever seen.

At the time, the Strip wasn’t even the Strip yet. The Flamingo was one of the very first glamorous properties built outside downtown Las Vegas, helping to kickstart what would eventually become one of the most famous streets in the world.

Siegel poured money into the Flamingo—$6 million, to be exact (a massive sum at the time)—and micromanaged every detail from the pink color scheme to the imported marble. He wanted it to rival the hotels of Hollywood, and in many ways, he succeeded.

💥 Scandal, Style, and Siegel’s Downfall

Unfortunately, the cost overruns and opening hiccups didn’t sit well with Siegel’s mob associates. Just a few months after the grand opening, Siegel was assassinated in Beverly Hills—a crime that remains officially unsolved to this day. But his legacy in Las Vegas? Very much alive.

The Flamingo, which was later taken over by mob associate Moe Sedway, stabilized financially and became a profitable, glamorous destination that attracted celebrities, gamblers, and curious tourists alike.

🌴 Flamingos, Palm Trees, and Real-Life Birds

Yes, there are real flamingos at the Flamingo Hotel. Today, the Flamingo Wildlife Habitat is a lush, tropical escape tucked right in the middle of the resort grounds. It’s free to visit and features a mix of Chilean flamingos, swans, turtles, and koi fish—adding a quirky twist to the classic Vegas experience.

🛎 The Flamingo Today: Retro Meets Renovated

While the original structure has been renovated over the years, the Flamingo has managed to hold onto its vintage glam aesthetic—think neon signs, retro-inspired décor, and a whole lot of personality. It’s a favorite for budget-conscious travelers who still want that center-strip action with a side of history.

It’s also hosted some of the Strip’s most legendary entertainers, including Donny and Marie Osmond, Wayne Newton, and more recently, RuPaul’s Drag Race Live!
