Just 25 Minutes from the Strip… Welcome to Red Rock

by Keli James

Living in Las Vegas, people always assume it’s all about the neon lights, fancy dinners, and constant motion. And don’t get me wrong, I love the energy of this city — the buzz, the skyline, the endless options for entertainment. But what they don’t always realize is just how close we are to something completely different… something quieter, more grounding, and honestly, kind of magical.

Just 25 minutes from the Strip — yes, really — you’ll find one of my absolute favorite places in the entire Las Vegas Valley: Red Rock Canyon.

This is where I go when I need to clear my head, recharge my spirit, or just get away from it all for a while. There’s something about driving out toward those fiery red cliffs that immediately shifts my energy. By the time I reach the entrance of the scenic loop, I’ve already let go of half my stress — and the rest usually melts away somewhere between the first overlook and the final trailhead.

I still remember my first real hike out there. It was Calico Tanks, and I didn’t really know what I was getting into. I just knew I needed to get outside. I wasn’t dressed for anything serious — no gear, no map, just a bottle of water and a curiosity that wouldn’t let me turn back. The trail winds through some of the most colorful sandstone I’ve ever seen, and there are spots where you have to climb a little — not scary, just enough to feel like an explorer. At the top, I stood there breathless (and not just from the climb) staring out at the Las Vegas skyline in the distance, with all that silence and space surrounding me. It was the kind of moment that stays with you.

Since then, I’ve tried just about every trail in the canyon. Some are short and sweet, like the Children’s Discovery Trail — perfect if you want to ease into the experience. Others, like Turtlehead Peak, will challenge you and reward you with views that are absolutely worth the effort. But no matter which path I take, I always leave feeling a little more grounded, a little more whole.

And here’s what I love most: Red Rock is whatever you need it to be. If you’re in the mood for an adventurous day hike, you’ve got miles and miles of trails waiting. If you’re just looking for a peaceful drive with beautiful views, the 13-mile scenic loop is filled with spots to pull over, snap a few photos, or just sit and breathe it all in. If you're anything like me, you’ll end up pulling off at every other turnout, just to soak in the views from a slightly different angle.

I usually tell friends who are visiting Vegas to skip one of the pool days or brunches and carve out half a day for Red Rock instead. Not just because it’s beautiful — which it absolutely is — but because it’s real. It’s wild and vast and unfiltered. It reminds you that this city isn’t just showgirls and slot machines. It’s also ancient rocks, big skies, and the kind of stillness that fills you up instead of draining you.

Some practical things I’ve learned over time: go early, especially during the warmer months. Bring more water than you think you’ll need. Wear real hiking shoes, even on the “easy” trails — the desert terrain is no joke. And if you’re going anytime between October and May, you’ll need to book a timed entry for the Scenic Drive. It’s worth planning for — trust me.

Red Rock Canyon isn’t just a nature spot — it’s a reminder that we all need space to breathe. And for me, it’s become a bit of a sanctuary. If you haven’t been in a while (or ever), maybe it’s time to go. I promise, it’ll change the way you see Las Vegas. It might even change the way you see yourself.

If you’re curious about homes nearby or just want more tips on how to explore the canyon, I’m always happy to share what I know. And if you’re ever up for a hike, well… you know who to call. 😊
